STATUTORY RULES AND ORDERS. 1946. No. 375.

APPRENTICESHIP COMMITTEE FOR THE FURNITURE TRADE (DUBLIN) (CONFIRMATION OF RULES) ORDER, 1946.

WHEREAS it is enacted by subsection (5) of section 8 of the Apprenticeship Act, 1931 (No. 56 of 1931), that every rule made by an apprenticeship committee under that section shall be submitted to the Minister for Industry and Commerce as soon as may be after it is made and no such rule shall be of any force or effect unless or until it is confirmed by order of the said Minister :

AND WHEREAS it is enacted by subsection (1) of section 9 of the said Act that the said Minister may, in respect of any rule submitted to him by an apprenticeship committee under that Act, either by order confirm such rule or refuse to confirm such rule :

AND WHEREAS the Apprenticeship Committee for the Furniture Trade (Dublin), being an apprenticeship committee established by the said Act, have, in exercise of the powers conferred on them by section 8 of the said Act, made the Rules set out in the Schedule to this Order, and have duly submitted those rules to the Minister for Industry and Commerce for confirmation by him in accordance with the said Act :

NOW, the Minister for Industry and Commerce, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by subsection (1) of section 9 of the Apprenticeship Act, 1931 (No. 56 of 1931), and of every and any other power him in this behalf enabling, hereby orders as follows :—

1. This Order may be cited as the Apprenticeship Committee for the Furniture Trade (Dublin) (Confirmation of Rules) Order, 1946.

2. The Interpretation Act, 1937 (No. 38 of 1937), applies to this Order, and to the Rules set out in the Schedule thereto.

3. The Rules set out in the Schedule to this Order are hereby confirmed and shall come into operation on the 28th day of December, 1946.

SCHEDULE.

RULES MADE BY THE APPRENTICESHIP COMMITTEE FOR THE FURNITURE TRADE (DUBLIN) ON THE 17TH DAY OF OCTOBER, 1946.

The Rules set out in the Schedule to the Apprenticeship Committee for the Furniture Trade (Dublin) Confirmation of Rules Order, 1938, are hereby amended as follows, that is to say, by the deletion of the rules in the said Schedule comprised under the heading " Part I—Apprenticeship Classification Rules—Classes of Persons" and by the substitution therefor of the following :—

PART I. APPRENTICESHIP CLASSIFICATION RULES.

The Committee declare that employment in the Trade of the classes of persons specified hereunder, in the manner specified, shall constitute employment by way of Apprenticeship in the Trade.

Classes of Persons—Persons whose employment in the Trade commenced on or after the 16th May, 1938, other than :

(a) Persons who have completed the appropriate period of apprenticeship in the Trade as specified in the Rules Regulating the Period of Apprenticeship;

(b) Blind or infirm persons employed in the Trade in an institution for such persons.

The Rules set out in the Schedule to the Apprenticeship Committee for the Furniture Trade (Dublin) (Confirmation of Rules) Order, 1944 are hereby amended as follows, that is to say, by the deletion of the rules in the said Schedule comprised under the heading "Rules regulating the number of Apprentices" and by the substitution therefor of the following :—

RULES REGULATING THE NUMBER OF APPRENTICES.

The Committee fix in relation to each employer carrying on the Trade in the Apprenticeship District, and specified in a list of such employers from time to time prepared by the Committee, the number of Apprentices which the Committee consider should be employed by each such employer, as follows :—

Class A.—ONE APPRENTICE to the first ONE, TWO OR THREE skilled workers* in that Class of the Trade, and thereafter, ONE additional Apprentice for each complete group of FOUR skilled workers* in excess of the first THREE in that Class.

Class B.—MALE APPRENTICES.—ONE APPRENTICE, to the first ONE, TWO or THREE skilled male workers* in that Class of the Trade, and thereafter, ONE additional Apprentice for each complete group of FOUR skilled male workers* in excess of the first THREE, in that Class.

Class B.—FEMALE APPRENTICES.—ONE APPRENTICE to the first ONE, TWO or THREE skilled female workers* in that Class of the Trade, and thereafter, ONE additional Apprentice for each complete group of FOUR skilled female workers* in excess of the first THREE, in that Class.

Class C.—ONE APPRENTICE to the first ONE, TWO or THREE skilled workers* in that Class of the Trade, and thereafter. ONE additional Apprentice for each complete group of FOUR skilled worker* in excess of the first THREE in that Class.

Class D.—ONE APPRENTICE to the first ONE, TWO or THREE skilled workers* in that Class of the Trade, and thereafter, ONE additional Apprentice for each complete group of THREE skilled workers* in excess of the first THREE in that Class.

Provided That : the number of skilled workers* to be taken into calculation for the purpose of these Rules shall be the average weekly number of such workers (as defined hereunder) employed by the employer during a period of 52 weeks ending on the date on which the Apprentice concerned is taken into employment.

*SKILLED WORKERS.—Workers employed on one or more of the operations specified in Part I of the Schedule to the Apprenticeship Committee for the Furniture Trade (Dublin) Confirmation of Rules Order, 1338; ( S. R. & O. No. 168 of 1938 ), who have had, the case of Male Workers, not less than six years' employment in the Trade, and, in the case of Female Workers, not less than four years' employment in the Trade.
