THE ROAD TRAFFIC (WEIGH-BRIDGES) ORDER, 1936.

ROAD TRAFFIC ACT, 1933 .

The Minister for Local Government and Public Health, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by Section 19 of the Road Traffic Act, 1933 , in relation to the weigh-bridges referred to in that section hereby orders and prescribes as follows, that is to say :—

1. This Order may be cited as the Road Traffic (Weigh-bridges) Order, 1936.

2. The Interpretation Act, 1923 , applies to the interpretation of this Order in the same manner in which it applies to an Act of the Oireachtas.

3. In this Order the expression " the Act " means the Road Traffic Act, 1933 ; the expression " the Minister " means the Minister for Local Government and Public Health ; the expression " weigh-bridge " means a weigh-bridge erected by a council in pursuance of Section 19 of the Act.

4. Every weigh-bridge shall be fitted with a weighing platform not less than 20 linear feet long and with not less than 8 linear feet wide.

5. Every weigh-bridge shall have a weighing capacity of not less than 20 tons.

6. Every weigh-bridge shall be designed so that :—

(a) the weight of any load placed on the weighing platform of the weigh-bridge is ascertained by means of one or more levers and not by means of a spring or springs; and

(b) the weight of the load on the weighing platform is indicated in tons, hundredweights, quarters and pounds to the nearest seven pounds by means of a self-indicating dial or a self-recording apparatus or a steelyard without loose weights.

7. Every weigh-bridge shall comply with the conditions as to construction set out in the Schedule to this Order unless the Minister, on the application of a council erecting a weigh-bridge, dispenses with any of the said conditions.

8. The requirements of these regulations shall be in addition to and not in substitution for any requirements made by or under the Weights and Measures Acts, 1878 to 1936.

SCHEDULE.

CONDITIONS AS TO CONSTRUCTION.

1. The culvert, the weigh-house and the walls and floor of the pit shall be constructed of one or more of the following materials, that is to say :—brick, stone or concrete—in accordance with plans and specification approved by the Minister.

2. The weigh-house shall be fitted with a window or windows, the glass area of which shall be at least one-tenth of the floor area of the weigh-house and one such window shall be so placed that the weighing platform is visible from within the weigh-house.

3. The weighing platform shall be made of cast-iron or steel and shall be constructed so that it will oscillate in the prevailing direction of passing traffic.

4. The knife-edge of every fulcrum and the bearings shall be made of hardened steel.

5. All working-parts of the weighing machine shall be renewable.
